Why America needs Take Root – An interview with Andrea Torrice, Project Director

Emerald Ash Borer
“I was reading about of the new scientific studies about trees and their positive impacts on human health. I had known about their role in helping to clean the air and reducing carbon footprints. But I was amazed at the new findings- everything from how trees emit chemicals that may reduce heart disease and fight cancer to helping neighborhoods in lowering crime rates.

Then while taking my morning run through a local park in Cincinnati where I live, I noticed about forty trees were dead and marked to be cut down. They were Ash trees infested with the Emerald Ash Borer, the new pest that recently arrived from Asia. EAB, along with the Asian Longhorn beetle, may destroy up to one third of Cincinnati’s green canopy in the near future. I love trees, and I was heartbroken to learn this. So necessity for more public awareness prompted this project.”
